The Age of Movies: Selected Writings of Pauline Kael

"Film criticism is exciting just because there is no formula to apply," Pauline Kael once observed, "just because you must use everything you are and everything you know."

The Age of Movies: Selected Writings of Pauline Kael is witty, exhilarating, and opinionated and the first new selection in more than a generation.

As a regular film critic for The New Yorker between 1968 and 1991, Kael used those formidable tools to shape a generation's taste, captivating readers with her ability to capture, with force and fluency, the essence of an actor's gesture or the full implication of a cinematic image. Movies, she said, are "the most total and encompassing art form we have," and she created a prose style that is exceptionally witty, precise, and improvised.

Whether she was celebrating the way even seemingly trash could tap deeply into our emotions or evoking the essence of a great artist as Orson Welles or Robert Altman, her unwavering eye for the scams and self-deceptions of a corrupt film industry was equally strong. This collection of her appraisals of the films that defined an era includes Breathless, Bonnie and Clyde, The Leopard, The Godfather, Last Tango in Paris, Nashville, among many more, some awaiting rediscovery, all of which provide the opportunity for masterpieces of observation and insight.

From 1968 to 1991, Pauline Kael wrote for The New Yorker magazine. Her reviews were witty, biting, highly opinionated, and sharply focused. Using a colloquial writing style, she approached movies emotionally. Her influence on other major critics including Armond White and Roger Ebert is widely regarded as the greatest of her day. "Kael has had a greater impact on the climate for film in America than any single individual over the last three decades," says Ebert.."
