Get ready for the world premiere of Paying For It at this year’s festival! This critically acclaimed memoir about being a john is now available in paperback for the first time.

Originally published in 2011, Paying for It became one of the most talked-about and controversial graphic novels of the year. A critical success, it received two glowing reviews in The New York Times and sold out of its first print run in just six months. Chester Brown’s distinctive and minimalist artwork shines in this new edition.

Combining the deeply personal and sexual themes of his earlier works ("I Never Liked You", "The Playboy") with the bold polemical style of Louis Riel, Brown chronicles his journey into the world of sex work—not just as a participant, but as an outspoken advocate. With a calm and straightforward narrative, he explores the realities of his experiences, offering a nuanced look at prostitution that challenges stereotypes and defies expectations.

From navigating the nuances of modern-day sex work, complete with online reviews and discreet transactions, to the often awkward realities of his encounters, Brown's memoir presents a fresh perspective on a hot-button topic. Paying for It is an insightful and provocative exploration of sex work that continues to spark conversation and debate.

Chester Brown was born in Montreal in 1960. He is the author of seven books and is best known for the non-fiction graphic novels Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography (2003) and Paying for It: A Comic-Strip Memoir About Being a John (2011). In 2024, Brown created a Louis Riel stamp for Canada Post as part of a set honouring Canadian cartoonists. He lives in Toronto.
