"There is no greater champion of nonfiction film in North America than Thom Powers. This book is his bible." – Michael Moore

For twenty years, Thom Powers has overseen the selection of documentaries for the Toronto International Film Festival. In Mondo Documentary, he shares his perspectives on more than 350 films that he has presented to audiences. They include the works of celebrated directors such as Werner Herzog, Laura Poitras, and Raoul Peck, and Alex Gibney; Oscar winners Inside Job, Undefeated, Free Solo, and No Other Land; and portraits of a multitude of music icons – Bruce Springsteen, Grace Jones, Yo-Yo Ma, and more. Whether you’re a documentary aficionado or a novice, prepare to discover a bounty of hidden treasures.

Thom Powers is the lead documentary programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival and the host of the Pure Nonfiction podcast. He was cofounder and artistic director of three prominent film showcases: the DOC NYC festival, the Montclair Film Festival, and IFC Center’s Stranger Than Fiction screening series. He has worked as a filmmaker (HBO, PBS), a teacher (NYU, SVA), and a book editor (Fantagraphics). Born in Detroit, he now lives with his wife and son in Montclair, New Jersey.
